Midnight Faces – “Donna” (Stereogum Premiere)
“No more file sharing,” says Matthew Doty, the multi-instrumentalist behind Midnight Faces. Doty and Midnight Faces vocalist Philip Stancil now both live in Los Angeles where they can work together, not over the computer, on developing their post-punk, new wave-inspired sound. “Donna,” the newest track from Midnight Faces, is tidy and quick, underlining Midnight Faces’ proclivity for clean, to-the-point compositions. The track is driven from start to finish by a bouncy bass line. Jangly, upbeat guitar and Stancil’s buzzy vocals layered over the driving rhythm. Each instrumental facet gets its own moment to shine: The bass in the beginning sets the foundation for the track, the guitar introduced in the chorus gives the track its sanguine sound, and there’s a brief interlude where the percussion gets some attention too. The danceable vibe is contrasted by some darker lyrics: “I just want to be one of the boys, but I’m always stuck with Donna.” Listen below.
