Beacon – “L1” (Stereogum Premiere)
Brooklyn Band To Watch alumni Beacon have a new EP called L1 on the way, and today we present the title track. It marks a fascinating progression for the duo: Whereas they once traded in space-age R&B with Rhye’s gentleness inhabiting lush digital pastures, “L1″ is smartly arranged electro-pop with a fervent tempo and an angsty undercurrent, like a brighter, more populist take on Thom Yorke’s dreary Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes. Only slightly brighter, though — the music is topped off with a gently whispered vocal about losing your agency as you slip in somebody else’s orbit. It’s an excellent song, so listen below.
