TLC’s Kickstarter-Funded Final Album Gets A Boost From Katy Perry
This is one of those weird pop music stories that we’ve almost become accustomed to hearing. TLC were once one of the dominant pop-music entities on planet Earth. But now, the R&B trio’s two surviving members T-Boz and Chili have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund what they’re claiming will be their “last and final album.” They’re seeking $150,000 in donations to make the LP, and they’ve still got to pull in nearly $45,000 in the next 29 days. But TMZ reports that they’ve got at least one very prominent supporter: Katy Perry. Perry reportedly donated $5,000 to the Kickstarter campaign. (Per TLC’s Kickstarter rewards, that means she’s entitled to, among other things, a slumber party with either Chili or T-Boz.) Perry does not get a whole lot of love around here, but her donation is honestly a fairly cool respect-your-elders move, an acknowledgement that she knows who put in work to make her whole thing possible. It’s not quite Nirvana taking Half Japanese on tour, but it’s that same impulse at work.
