Maybe the most striking thing about the unlikely Rihanna/Kanye West/Paul McCartney team-up “FourFiveSeconds” is the way it flies in the face of current pop and rap conventions. It is, after all, essentially an acoustic coffeehouse open-mic-night singalong jam, and it has absolutely no drums. But the skeleton of the song is strong, and now producer-of-the-moment DJ Mustard has attempted to translate it into a club banger. It’s striking hearing this already-familiar song retrofitted to Mustard’s elegant and minimal West Coast bounce. Sadly, though, Mustard has spent too much time lately on the EDM-festival circuit, and his new take on the song veers sadly close to pure cheese. Listen below.
