The 13th Floor Elevators Reuniting For First Show In 45 Years
They were right; we really did miss them! The 13th Floor Elevators, the pioneering psychedelic Texas band, broke up in 1969, and they haven’t gotten back together since. The band had an unhinged, furious proto-punk style, with electric jug player Tommy Hall adding an otherwoldly air to the music. Since they broke up, their legend has only grown, even as former frontman Roky Erickson has gone through some serious mental health struggles. And now they’re getting back together for the first time in over 40 years, headlining this year’s edition of the Levitation Festival (formerly the Austin Psych Fest), where they’re joining a lineup that already includes the Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, the Jesus And Mary Chain, Spiritualized, and a whole lot of others. The Austin Chronicle has an interview with Hall about the reunion, and it includes nuggets like this: “That’s part of the thing of the Elevators. That we’ll live forever. Once we understand the way the universe works, our minds will be ahead of our bodies and that should be the result.”
The Levitation Festival goes down 5/8-10 at Austin’s Carson Creek Ranch.
