Simon Joyner – “Nostalgia Blues”
Off-kilter Americana legend Simon Joyner perked up my ears with “You Got Under My Skin,” an early preview from his upcoming album Grass, Branch & Bone. “Nostalgia Blues,” a seven-minute epic from the same record, is just as captivating. Joyner’s sorrowful, skeletal folk songcraft reminds me of everyone from Dylan to Reed to Oldham to Berman. His voice expounds the narrative with a conversational quaver that reminds me of Conor Oberst, that trembling delivery that pushes for notes outside its range with authority and dignity. (And indeed, Joyner is such a big influence on Oberst that Oberst wrote Joyner’s official bio.) You’d be a fool to skip this one, so listen.
Grass, Branch & Bone is out 3/17 on Woodsist. Pre-order it here.
