Lord Huron’s 2012 debut, Lonesome Dreams, contained multitudes. The Los Angeles band’s central songwriter, Ben Schneider, sculpted each of the album’s 10 tracks to be grandiose forest fires of bellowing folk, something he achieved through a repeated process: Pack the tiny kindling up front via a guitar-led chord figure, build up to the percussive eruption, and finally, explode into a full blaze of instrumental garnishes. When executed with flair, that kind of formula still wins hearts, even a decade after Funeral (arguably) perfected it. But it’s been three years since Lonesome Dreams, and Schneider has since written and produced a new album called Strange Trails. If the bustling, restless “The World Ender” is any indication, the songwriter has branched out and found fertile ground beyond the woods, incorporating surf rhythms and keyboard textures into his work. The melty down-strummed chords that dominate the track are kinda neat, invoking both the Old West and the hazy skylines of modern California. Listen to the song below.
