Kendrick Lamar’s rabidly anticipated new album To Pimp A Butterfly is finally coming out later this month, and in recent months, we’ve heard two of its songs, “i” and “The Blacker The Berry.” Tonight, a third showed up online. “King Kunta” is a ferocious, racially charged song that references Roots and Michael Jackson and Bill Clinton and Richard Pryor, all to depict Kendrick as a force breaking loose of the bonds imposed by the powers that be. There’s some great rap shit-talk in there, too. Kendrick delivers it over a weird, skittering funk track with a burping talkbox bassline and ringing acoustic guitars and horn stabs and a guitar solo. It’s perhaps the most Funkadelic-informed track Kendrick has ever made, and it’s dense and powerful enough that we’ll have to hear it a bunch of times before we’re even close to figuring it out.
