Every time a cult TV show ends, a media storm of nostalgia sweeps over the internet. That’s happening with Mad Men right now, and the winds of conversation uncovered that a Björk song was almost used to soundtrack a scene. Series creator Matthew Weiner and star Jon Hamm revealed that fact in a recent panel discussion called “LACMA: A Tribute to Mad Men” held at the Film Independent in LA.

The season five finale ends with Nancy Sinatra’s “You Only Live Twice,” but Weiner noted that they almost used Björk’s cover of the track — and the audience laughed at the idea (though I’m not totally sure why?). Anyway, Hamm came hard with another zinger after that crowd reaction: “Björk was originally going to be Peggy,” he said. “You laugh — she’s amazing.”

Weiner also elaborated on why he chose to select Sinatra’s song for the final episode of season five:

We were listening to this all the time, and I thought I could use this at the end of the show. And then I had this idea that I should save this and the whole James Bond aesthetic to when it started happening (1967). James Bond was pretty deep in the culture. One of the things they attribute to the success of James Bond — movie people anyway — Dr. No [came out] right around the time of the Cuban missile crisis. There were so many great things about James Bond, but this song, ‘You Only Live Twice’… I wanted to wait for it to be in that period.

If Mad Men had gone forward with the Björk plan people probably would have flipped out at the anachronism like they did when the Decemberists and the Cardigans made the cut. Any others I’m forgetting?
