Kurt & Courtney’s Squalid L.A. Apartment Is Now An Airbnb Rental
In case watching the intensely personal Brett Morgen documentary Cobain: Montage Of Heck didn’t leave you feeling close enough to Nirvana’s late frontman, there’s one more thing you can do to optimize your fandom. Brandon Kleiman, the man who now rents Cobain and Courtney Love’s former L.A. apartment — the one they disappeared into on a months-long heroin binge, as depicted in the movie — will let you stay in it for $150 a night. We saw pictures of this apartment a year ago, and it looked pretty grody in its heyday. Now Kleiman’s spruced it up and listed it on Airbnb as “Kurt Cobain’s Private 1b + 1bth.” In an interview with Vulture, the tenant commented that he mostly rents to Nirvana fans (duh), but that surprisingly, there hasn’t been much demand for the place. Cobain lived in the Fairfax apartment between 1991-1992, while Love was pregnant with Frances Bean. Kleiman told Vulture the following:
The day I signed the lease, I was sitting with the landlord,” Kleinman says, “and as soon as I signed on the dotted line, he said, ‘Okay, now I can tell you the real story behind this apartment.’ He kept it a secret because he wasn’t getting great tenants when he advertised the apartment’s backstory. He went on to tell me about what it was like having Kurt Cobain live here, and what to watch for. It’s been funny. Once every 60 days or so, I’ll get a weird, older gentleman, a rocker-type dude, sort of a burnout, knocking on the door, saying, ‘Do you know what used to happen here?'”
