Cheatahs – “Murasaki” Video (Stereogum Premiere)
“Murasaki,” the methodically fiery opening song and title track from Cheatahs’ latest EP, was inspired by Japanese author Murasaki Shikibu’s undefinable 11th century epic The Tale Of Genji. I can’t say if director Matt Portman’s video — which features a suavely dressed man and woman playing out what seems like an upscale party or high-stakes crime drama before descending into minimalistic surrealism — is also inspired by Murasaki’s story. But I can tell you that it’s as arresting as the song itself, and you should watch it below.
