The Lonely Island Movie Is A Boy Band Reunion Satire
The Lonely Island already proved their legendary musical-comic genius via three albums and dozens of SNL Digital Shorts. Plus, all three guys were involved with the highly underrated Hot Rod — Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone as actors, Akiva Schaffer as director — and, oh yeah, they scored an Oscar nomination for their Tegan And Sara collab “Everything Is Awesome.” Now they’re making a movie that draws on all that experience. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the previously reported Judd Apatow-produced Lonely Island feature film will parody boy-band reunions:
The project takes aim on the fluffy music documentaries of recent years such as Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never and Katy Perry’s Part Of Me. It centers on a rapper whose latest album bombs and he must do the unthinkable: a reunion concert with his former boy band.
All three Lonely Island guys are starring in the film, which Taccone and Schaffer will direct. And if I was a betting man, I’d bet Justin Timberlake will make an appearance.
