Jack White has been living in Nashville for years, and Nashville is where he picked to situate his Third Man Records empire. But White is still a Detroit native, and he presumably knows that Detroit is going to need a few more businesses in it if it’s going to get any better. So it’s cool to see that White is opening up a branch of Third Man Records in his hometown.

White is teaming up with Shinola, a Detroit-based manufacturer of things like bicycles, watches, and leather goods. Together, the two companies are taking over the building, in Detroit’s Cass Corridor neighborhood, that already houses Shinola’s flagship store. Shinola is looking to expand into things like speakers, turntables, and headphones, so it makes sense for them to team up with White. And the Cass Corridor neighborhood happens to be where White went to high school and where the White Stripes played their first show. In a statement, White says that the neighborhood “has always been the most inspiring area of Detroit for me as an artist and as a Detroiter. From the great visual artists like Gordon Newton to the music of the Gories, and the birth of the Detroit garage rock scene, the Corridor has nurtured Detroit’s soul and inventiveness for decades. That spirit pushes forward with Shinola’s passion and will come full circle for the artists of the Corridor that work with Third Man Records to plant a new foundation there to help keep that creative spirit alive for decades to come.”

The store is set to open 11/27, Black Friday, and Third Man promises “many special surprises in store.”
