SHARER (Young & Sick And JD Samson) – “Body Tonight” (Stereogum Premiere)
SHARER is the collaborative project of Band To Watch alumnus Young & Sick and radical punk veteran JD Samson. Young & Sick is the moniker of Dutch artist Nick van Hofwegen, who has his hands in so many different ventures, one being creating the single art you see above, that he just calls Young & Sick a “music and art project” rather than a band. Samson was part of the now-defunct riot grrrl outfit Le Tigre with Bikini Kill/the Julie Ruin’s Kathleen Hanna, and currently fronts the activism-heavy band MEN. SHARER’s very first public track is “Body Tonight,” which could probably host a variety of dances from the Cha-Cha to the Tango — it’s just that diverse in its sound, from jazz to soul to EDM. The harmonies in the chorus (“Bring me closer to your body tonight / Bring me closer to your lovin’ all right”) are just phenomenal. Listen below.
Young & Sick offered this quote on the collaboration:
I used to go see JD simply as a fan while living in London. Her live shows were always absolutely fantastic, leaving me a sweaty mess. When the opportunity arose for me to work with her, I jumped at it. A few months later, here is the beginning of our new friendship. I couldn’t be more excited to share it.
And here are some words from Samson:
Nick and I were matched up to write songs for other people, but after about two seconds of sharing, we knew what we had was something completely and utterly ours. Love and respect for your collaborators is so important, and working with Nick is such a beautiful expression of our mutual admiration. I love our process and can’t wait until the world gets to share the joy.
Lastly, here’s a “band photo” illustrated by Young & Sick:
“Body Tonight” will be out 8/21 with accompanying remixes by Midnight Magic and LEFTI.
