Skylar Spence – “I Can’t Be Your Superman”
Skylar Spence kicked off his new album, Prom King, with the wonderful flirt-bubble-funk of “Fiona Coyne,” (RIP Saint Pepsi) and each subsequent track builds upon that momentum with a flourish. The self-indulgent self-love confetti-pop of “Can’t You See” racked up a 5 Best Songs Of The Week slot and “Affairs” arched back toward mellow chillwave without losing the pop-funk thread. Today he’s released yet another massive new track, “I Can’t Be Your Superman,” a barrage of disco-funk defiance that refuses to get sucked into a hero complex. But rejection has never sounded less bleak, and Ryan DeRobertis has turned an intervention into something that sounds desirable. Listen.
Prom King is out 9/18 via Carpark Records. Pre-order it here.
