Watch The Weather Station Cover Joy Division
The Weather Station, aka Tamara Lindeman, released her third full-length album Loyalty this year to rapturous acclaim. (One critic even called it the best folk album of the year.) Though it’s her third, Loyalty was Lindeman’s first record to see international release, and specifically to have major support within the US via North Carolina folk purveyors Paradise of Bachelors. As such, she’s been getting some long-overdue attention from places like The A.V. Club, who run an annual cover song series called A.V. Undercover. Artists get to pick from a pre-determined list, and the options slim down as the year goes on, but Lindeman and her crew got to take a crack at Joy Division’s “Transmission.” Now, I’d usually be terrified for an artist I enjoy to attempt covering one of Joy Division’s seminal songs, but her unflappable calm works perfectly here, mirroring Ian Curtis’ deadpan. The band even manages to imbue a bit of bluegrass into the song’s post-punk rhythm. Watch below.
