Hugh – “Learn To Fall” (Stereogum Premiere)
As the story goes, Josh Idehen and Izzy Brooks — the musicians now operating under the name Hugh — first met in a bar while trying to Shazam the song that was playing in the background. Now they’re making sleek, inviting music in that amorphous but popular zone between synthpop, R&B, and indie rock. The group, which has expanded to a quartet, will release their new double A-side single “Learn To Fall” / “Almost Done, Almost” soon, and today we premiere the former track. It starts out small, with Brooks emoting soulfully over piano, but soon enough Idehen’s voice enters along with a swell of electronic ballad sounds. There are traces of the xx in this sound, particularly when Idehen and Brooks are singing together, but it’s far more outgoing and ambitious in scope — decidedly big, boldfaced pop with a heavy melancholy streak. Listen below.
“Learn To Fall” / “Almost Done, Almost” is out this Friday, 9/25.
