See Through Dresses – “Drag Scene” (Stereogum Premiere)
Nebraska’s See Through Dresses are following up their 2013 self-titled debut with End Of Days, an EP that the band described in an interview as something of a catch-all for songs they wanted to release but felt wouldn’t fit in on their next full-length. That explains the disparities between lead single “Haircut,” which takes on the rebellious affectation of early ’90s indie, and their next one, “Drag Scene,” which is more apt to get swept up in stormy melancholy. You can still tell the same band is behind the gears — both songs share the same tight progressions, and swell up in similar ways once they get going — but the differences between the two tracks highlight the band’s versatility. Matthew Carroll takes over vocal duties on this one, and he brings an unfettered wanting to the table: “I don’t want to drag you down, I just want to drag you out,” he repeats throughout the song, aching to find a place with his partner where they both feel comfortable.
