Stream Ryan Hemsworth & Lucas Taking Flight EP
Having made a name for himself as one of the most exciting producers in music today, Toronto talent Ryan Hemsworth has lately made a point of shedding light on his talented friends by way of his Secret Songs download series, which our own Peter Helman smartly described as “a toy box full of twinkly, bloopy, genre-blurring electronic music.” The latest manifestation of Hemsworth’s generous online A&R is Taking Flight, an EP he recorded with Seattle bedroom producer Lucas, a prior Secret Songs contributor.
The six songs they created together deconstruct pop in an ambient fashion similar to the remixes that put Hemsworth on the map — think of the way he made the various components of Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You” float like layers in a screensaver — but along the way it reminds me of lots of awesome music from disparate corners: from the playful sound collage of the Books, the alien post-rock of Sigur Rós, the glitchy boom-bap of Prefuse 73, the dark electronic cityscapes of Shlohmo, the trap and R&B aggressions of Yeezus. We’ve already heard “Angel” and “From Grace,” and now the whole project is available to stream below. You should.
Taking Flight is out today via Secret Songs with cover art by Morimoto Shohei. Buy it at iTunes, and if you’re in NYC on 10/16, check out Hemsworth and Lucas’ CMJ DJ set at at Palisades in Brooklyn along with sets by Lontalius and dd elle. And lastly, remember when Hemsworth and Mitski critiqued Song Of The Summer candidates for Stereogum? That was awesome.
