The Unspeakable Practices is a new project spearheaded by Kid Millions (Oneida, Soldiers Of Fortune, etc.) and essayist/noted Taylor Swift critic Rick Moody, though their massive lineup also includes experimental trumpet player Nate Wooley, bassists Brad Truax (ex-Spiritualized, Interpol) and Richard Hoffman (Sightings), guitarist Shahin Motia (Ex Models, Oneida), organ player David Grubbs (Squirrel Bait, Gastr Del Sol), and saxophone player Michael Foster. The lot of them combine for an abrasive yet ethereal improv racket topped off by Moody spewing nasal rants and raves out of the Steve Albini/Craig Finn playbook. Here’s Moody on their process:

It was really important to me to be reactive with respect to the amazing musicians I was working with. It was, in fact, important for me to be IN the band, not separate from the band. Another instrument in the orchestra, rather than something fused onto the music. Not lyrics in front, and music behind, but all one instrument.

The band will release their self-titled debut album next month. Rhythmically charged lead single “A Steadying Effect” starts out intense but eventually gives way to something slightly softer and prettier, albeit still wild — a steadyiiiiing effect in word and deed. It’s rad, so listen.
