I’ve been writing this column for years now, and this is one of the strongest weeks we’ve ever had, especially with the two sprawling, loony masterpieces fighting it out for the #1 spot. My one complaint, if it can even count as a complaint: This is the last week of Halloween-themed music videos, and yet only one of the top five below fits into that category. Usually, we can count on Halloween to give us some of the best videos of the year. But I don’t know; maybe people had bigger things on their minds this week. Our five picks are below.

5. MØ – “Kamikaze” (Dir. Truman & Cooper)

All hail the rise of the damaged, Harmony Korine-looking Scandinavian K-pop video.

4. Lazyboy Empire – “Vampire” (Dir. Isaac Ravishankara)

Working theory, these vampires were turned in the early-’90s Ace Of Base era, and they never felt the need to update their fashion or dance styles.

3. Blood Orange – “Sandra’s Smile” (Dir. Dev Hynes)

I like to think about this one as a statement about using dance and style and artistry and physical human grace as responses to centuries of unimaginable oppression.

2. Kendrick Lamar – “These Walls” (Dir. Colin Tilley & The Little Homies)

A beautiful and intricate and soulful song gets a video that’s, more or less, a Bugs Bunny adaptation of House Party. When Terry Crews hit the Quan, I just about lost it.

1. Grimes – “Flesh Without Blood/Life In The Vivid Dream” (Dir. Grimes)

There’s so much energy here, so many ideas in play, that I’m just mad when more videos aren’t like this. If you’re a band and you’re knocking together another video made up of grainy stock footage, take a long look at this and think about what you could be doing.
