Inspired by a Tarot card that signifies new beginnings, Baltimore artist Benny Boeldt has put his longtime project Adventure on hold and begun releasing albums under his own name. The first, 8 Of Cups, is a compilation of pleasing melodies and perplexing samples that are as easy to listen to as they are intriguing. One fine example is “Valley Amnesia,” a meditative electronic instrumental in the Aphex Twin tradition. Somehow dreamy yet frenetic all at once, it begins as a watery trickle but eventually explodes into a gorgeous flurry of skittering drums and cascading piano melodies. Behold the sound of the mind clicking into overdrive.
