Margaret Glaspy builds songs around disconnection. On “You And I” and “Somebody To Anybody” — two tracks that will appear on the singer-songwriter’s upcoming debut, and are being packaged into an EP that will be released tomorrow — she takes on the position of someone who isn’t interested in being in a relationship just for the sake of being in a relationship. On “You And I,” she’s figuring out how to let a dude down easy: “I don’t want to see you cry, but it feels like a matter of time.” And more to the point: “You and I have been a mistake/ I let it linger too long.” A lot of lost love songs operate in one of two modes — pining away or cutting off ties in a blaze of glory — and it’s refreshing to hear someone plainly state that they don’t give a fuck, but still want to be considerate of the other person who got invested too much.

And while “You And I” is more tactile, with its crunchy guitars and easy-to-grasp and all-too-familiar relationship dynamics, “Somebody To Anybody” takes a metaphorical approach that’s as slippery as the pronouns in its title: “I’m a little rock on a big mountain/ Nobody’s calling my name/ Nobody’s paying me mind,” Glaspy opens, making it sound like this is her ideal state. “I’m a little drop from a big fountain/ Oh, I blend in, and that’s fine.” “Somebody To Anybody” makes flying solo feel like the way to go: “Just thinking of being a pair had me suffering, and made me split.” There’s no remorse in Glaspy’s voice when she sings “It’s just that I don’t want to be somebody to anybody” — it’s just the way it is.
