Massive Attack Debut Four New Tracks In Their Fantom iPhone App
Massive Attack have been relatively quiet since 2010’s Heligoland. It was nice to have a reminder of how awesome they are when “Paradise Circus” played one more time to open the Luther holiday special. Their session with Run The Jewels also induced a fiend itch in many a fan for RTJ3. But those peripheral grumblings and the announcement of a European tour in 2016 hinted at more to come.
Now, Massive Attack have launched the iPhone app Fantom, which provides a “sensory music experience” for four new tracks: “Dead Editors,” “Ritual Spirit,” “Voodoo In My Blood,” and “Take It There.” According inferences from song credits, “Voodoo in My Blood” is a Young Fathers collab and “Take It There” credits “thaws,” hinting at a Tricky collab (Tricky’s government name is Adrian Thaws). Group member Robert del Naja apparently had a hand in designing the app, and he defines it as: “A sensory music player that remixes and reforms songs uniquely using a variety of environmental variables including location, movement, time of day, heartbeat and the integral moving image camera.” The songs cannot be heard in their entirety, but you can “remix” the snippets in real time. The audio-visual clips users create can also be shared via social media. New Massive Attack is good news no matter how it arrives.
