SXSW 2016 Film Premieres Include Sky Ferreira Thriller, Death By Audio Doc, Chet Baker Biopic
SXSW 2016 is fast approaching. We already know the full lineup of bands that will descend on Austin next month for the music side of the festival, and today, the organizers have announced the lineup of movies that will be screened at the accompanying nine-day film festival.
The Sky Ferreira-starring thriller The Trust, which follows corrupt cops Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood in their attempt to rob a vault of drug money, is set to make its world premiere at SXSW this year. Also premiering are Born To Be Blue, an Ethan Hawke-starring biopic of jazz icon Chet Baker, and Goodnight Brooklyn — The Story Of Death By Audio, a documentary about the Williamsburg DIY venue that was forced to shut down in 2014.
The long list of premieres includes a whole bunch of music documentaries — the Austin City Limits documentary A Song For You: The Austin City Limits Story, a documentary about the Madison, Wisconsin studio that produced Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Garbage called The Smart Studios Story, Gary Numan doc Gary Numan: Android In La La Land, the Quincy Jones III-directed The Art of Organized Noize, a documentary about James Lavelle of UNKLE called Artist & Repertoire (featuring DJ Shadow, 3D of Massive Attack, and Josh Homme), Honky Tonk Heaven: Legend of the Broken Spoke, Soundbreaking — Stories From The Cutting Edge Of Recorded Music, BANG! The Bert Berns Story (about the songwriter of “Twist And Shout” and “Piece Of My Heart”), swing dance documentary Alive And Kicking, jazz doc I Go Back Home – Jimmy Scott, and Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America, about the black boogie-woogie pianist who seeks out and befriends members of the Ku Klux Klan. There’s also a Korean karaoke drama called Karaoke Crazies, which sounds appropriately crazy.
Although they’re not premiering at SXSW, the festival will also screen Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, a documentary about Sharon Jones’ battle with cancer called Miss Sharon Jones!, Jack White and T Bone Burnett’s The American Epic Sessions, which features artists like Nas and Alabama Shakes recording with rebuilt 1920s-era recording technology, and We Are X, which follows the story of ’80s Japanese heavy metal band X Japan.
