In the past, California Sunday Magazine and Mailchimp have paired up the likes of Bethany Cosentino & Molly Ringwald, Father John Misty & John C. Reilly, and Sharon Van Etten & Sharon Jones for their email conversation series “The Thread.” Their latest match-up is legendary Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale (who we also talked to recently) and Animal Collective’s Avey Tare and Geologist (real names Brian Weitz and David Portner, respectively). Cale plays on one of the songs on AnCo’s upcoming new album, Painting With, so their conversation is especially apropos. In their discussion, they talk about unlikely performance environments, touring techniques, and the Baltimore-Washington Airport debut of Painting With:

[Geologist:] My dad and brother actually both work there and know the airport manager, but we didn’t include them at all in this plan. I was afraid if it went wrong I’d have to yell at my family instead of our manager. BWI actually has its music programmed by a local radio station—WTMD—and they throw in local music quite often. I once heard Beach House in the family restroom while changing my kid’s diaper. Our manager knew someone at the station and he asked if we could take over the signal they feed into the airport for 24 hours and just loop the new record.
