Anenon – “Once” (Stereogum Premiere)
Brian Allen Simon is an LA-based saxophonist, producer, and arranger who goes by the name Anenon. With the latest single off of his upcoming LP Petrol, the artist combines elements of electronic, ambient and jazz in order to make a track that is spatially, rhythmically and texturally intriguing. Juxtaposing rhythmically dense uptempo drums with a thick layer of ethereal synth pads, “Once” reflects an album that was inspired by Simon’s surroundings. From the “frenzied kinetic energy of LA’s freeways” to “moments of thoughtful, early morning solitude,” the album was born as a testament to understanding “the beauty of distance and the consistencies of irregularity” that pervades life as an Angeleno. Listen below, and check out prior single “Mouth” as well.
As a bonus, here’s a 25-minute recording of Anenon’s performance last month at Monument at MOCA Grand Avenue, accompanied by Yvette Holzwarth, Jon-Kyle Mohr, and Sam Gendel.
Petrol is out 3/4 via Friends Of Friends. Pre-order it here. Anenon will open for Big Black Delta on 2/27 at Pappy & Harriet’s in LA.
