Drake, Kendrick Get Major Keys
It’s been a big week for rappers and keys to various cities! On Thursday, proud Toronto native Drake received the key to the city from Toronto Mayor John Tory. On Drake’s new single “Summer Sixteen,” he raps, “I might get a key to the city and give it to Wayne/ Or give it to one of the young boys to carry the wave,” so we’ll see what he actually does with it. And today, Kendrick Lamar was given the key to the city of Compton by Mayor Aja Brown. “Kendrick Lamar is a phenomenal artist whose work has served as a catalyst to raise a new level of consciousness for this generation,” Brown in a statement, as The Los Angeles Times reports. “His message challenges the status quo and motivates listeners to rethink our society’s institutions.” Brown also quoted “Alright” during the ceremony and joked that Compton’s key is “better than Drake’s key.” Check out photos and footage from both events below.
