Strong Asian Mothers – “The More That I” (Stereogum Premiere)
London trio Strong Asian Mothers comprise best friends Kalim Patel, Amer Chadha-Patel, and Josh Stadlen. They’ve made music in separate bands for quite some time, but they’ve melded their different inspirations and sensibilities well in their new project. They draw inspiration from hip-hop, R&B, electro, and big band, and combine those sounds into an evocative, anthemic genre-blend. The first single from their upcoming debut, The Lynx Africa EP, is the reflective gumbo “The More That I.” Big, switching drum patterns, quick sweeps, deep synths, and triumphant horns lift Patel’s infectious, piercing thoughts about how he never seems to be satisfied. He sings on the huge hook, “The harder I push/ The more that I live/ The years that it took/ To be understood/ The harder I strive/ The more that I/ The hunger I hide the more that I.” The very human condition of always wanting more swells up in this song with the larger-than-life arrangement and that hook that I’ll be humming all day. Check it out.
The Lynx Africa EP is out 5/20.
