T-Rextasy – “Chik’N” (Stereogum Premiere)
T-Rextasy have been charming crowds around New York City since 2013 with their impressive live show, but up until now they’ve only had a three-track EP and a couple stray demos to their name. Today, they’re announcing their wonderfully titled debut full-length, Jurassic Punk, with one of the most delicious songs in their small but growing repertoire. “Chik’N” starts with a schoolyard handclap and the assertion that “I am not a piece of food,” and goes on to rip apart cutesy nicknames (“don’t call me cupcake, or honey pie”) for how they devalue the bestowed into just another thing to be consumed. “You are under the impression I’m your personal grocery,” Lyris Faron sings in a buttery smooth twang. “You’re under the delusion that you’re making the most of me/ But each time that you call me pastry, you chip away at my agency.” The band tackles an issue that means a lot to them with levity — comedy is usually the best way to go about getting something done, after all — but T-Rextasy demand to be taken seriously, and on their own terms.
