David August – “Ouvert” (Stereogum Premiere)
Berlin-based composer and electronic artist David August has released “Ouvert” from his upcoming J.B.Y. / Ouvert EP. August recently composed an original symphony for Berlin’s Symphony Orchestra, and it is this classical mastery and understanding of intricacy that courses through his latest electronic single. “Ouvert” begins with several layers of calming, resonant synthetic sounds to clear out your mind. This glossy sound eventually translates into a rapid buildup of beats, delivered with a dynamic crispness you might expect from a composer. While the song is named after a variation of the German card game Skat, as its anticipation becomes intertwined with the song’s calming effect, its title is accurately represented, subverting the rules of the game of sound. But once this intensity within your eardrums subsides, you are left with only a shimmery euphoric sensation, leaving your consciousness cleansed and feeling as if it has been opened to cosmological expansion. David August’s J.B.Y. / Ouvert EP will be out later this month via Counter Records.
