The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
Those of us who spend way too much time on the internet and pay way too much attention to music will doubtlessly spend some of this weekend staring at our laptops or phones, attempting to figure out what’s happening in the shaky fan-made clips of surprise Coachella appearances. That’ll be fun! Before that, though, let’s treat ourselves to a few actual honest-to-god music videos, since there were some good ones this week. Our picks are below.
5. Day Wave – “Stuck” (Dir. Ryan Baxley)
Somehow, Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus’ ideas for a fictional Day Wave video are more interesting than anything else about Day Wave.
4. Carly Rae Jepsen – “Boy Problems” (Dir. Petra Collins)
It’s weirdly awesome that no boys appear in CRJ’s video, and CRJ’s haircut imagines some alternate reality in which Pat Benatar starred in the “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” video instead of Cyndi Lauper.
3. M.I.A. – “Rewear It” (Dir. Philippe Tempelman)
So this is really just an extended H&M commercial with really good dancing in it, and there’s something inherently lame about that. On the other hand, it is really good dancing.
2. Kvelertak – “1985” (Dir. Fredrik S. Hana)
I’ve been to Scandinavia a couple of times. It’s a great place, and everyone is cool and rich and attractive. Things run smoothly. And yet, this sort of thing seems oddly plausible. You get the sense that any of these beautiful motherfuckers could just snap and start a Devil’s Rejects death-cult at any moment.
1. Mitski – “Your Best American Girl” (Dir. Zia Anger)
Sometimes, it’s the simplest videos that work the best, that convince you that you always liked the song even more than you already knew.
