Colder – “Inside” (Stereogum Premiere)
French producer Marc Nguyen Tan, better known as Colder, is an electronic innovator. His sound amalgamates artful waves of the past ranging from krautrock to post-punk while propelling his music into the future via dark electronica. Though Colder released his third album Many Colours late last year and shared a new EP called Some Lost Tapes on Record Store Day, the project is not easing into a break between album cycles. Rather, Colder will release two albums on the same day this June, a rhythm-heavy collection called Goodbye and a more ambient set called The Rain.
With the announcement of his upcoming albums, Colder has released “Inside,” the first single off Goodbye. It’s a mellow, transformative krautrock track that takes you into into the mindset of an individual questioning their sanity. The song begins slowly, with only a few quiet, paced synthetic rhythms at play as Nguyen Tan gently sings, “What’s going on inside?” And something is going on inside, as the song takes a different turn, whirling you into bold percussion, trickles of guitar, and intensifying, distorted sounds like that of voices speaking a foreign language in your head. Throughout the song, though, the same sequencer rhythm remains, perhaps illustrating the bit of sanity that exists even among the chaos. Listen below.
