Members Of Liturgy, No Age, Circuit Des Yeux, & More To Perform Glenn Branca’s Symphonies At RBMA Event
In the early-’80s New York no wave era, the avant-garde composer Glenn Branca made his name with his guitar symphonies — extremely loud, clanging pieces performed by a ton of guitarists playing on weirdly tuned instruments at the same time. Back then, Branca’s ensemble included people like Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, Swans’ Michael Gira, and Helmet’s Page Hamilton. And now, as part of the Red Bull Music Academy’s RBMA New York festival, a bunch of their spiritual descendants will come together to play some of Branca’s music.
At New York’s Masonic Hall on 5/16, 11 guitarists will assemble to perform Branca’s Symphonies 8, 10, and 12. The lineup of guitarists includes No Age’s Randy Randall, Circuit Des Yeux’s Haley Fohr, Liturgy’s Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, Krallice’s Mick Barr, Guardian Alien’s Greg Fox, and the original Glenn Branca Ensemble member Reg Bloor. Meanwhile, Branca himself will do a live discussion 5/3 at Red Bull Studios New York. For all the relevant info, head over here.
