’90s alt-pop stalwarts Garbage ended a long hiatus with 2012’s Not Your Kind Of People, and they’ve ended a shorter hiatus with the announcement of the forthcoming Strange Little Birds. The lead single is “Empty,” but it’s full of vintage rhythmic shoegaze as the band mentioned the album would be a return to “a beginner’s headspace.” The hook, “I’m so empty/ You’re all I talk about,” is simple, but also huge and penetrating. If this is any indication of what the rest of the album will sound like, it will certainly be a two-decade return to form. Listen.
