Creed’s Scott Stapp Hints That He’s Stone Temple Pilots’ New Frontman
Stone Temple Pilots recently launched a public search for a new lead singer following the departure of Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and the death of band co-founder Scott Weiland. And it seems the remaining STP members believe they’ve found the man who can take them higher. Which singer are they welcoming with arms wide open? Per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, it’s none other than Creed leader Scott Stapp.
Stapp gave an interview to Jason Bailey of Atlanta’s Rock 100.5 this morning to promote his current solo tour. And although he could “neither confirm nor deny” that he’s taking over vocal duties for STP, he heavily hinted that he was joining up with the band. Specifically, here’s what he said:
I’m excited to be back out on the road also been working on a new album with a new group of guys. Guys from some pretty well-known rock bands that you guys will know. I can’t really share the details about it but there’s a lot of good things going on that I can’t tell you till later in June when we’ll be making the announcement…This other band I’m jamming with is its own band with its own band name.
He then offered more details:
I will tell you this, there is a six-degree separation connection between this new project and the band you mentioned.
And when Bailey mentioned that Stapp is using the same tour bus Weiland died on, Stapp replied:
Dude you are just on point, aren’t you?
You’d think that after years of putting up with Weiland’s self-destructive behavior, STP would be hesitant to align themselves with Stapp, who’s demonstrated some erratic tendencies of his own in recent years. But it does make a certain amount of aesthetic sense given that STP helped pave the way for Creed’s success, and Stapp’s muscular bellow could definitely replicate some of Weiland’s low-register vocals. Whether or not STP are creating their own prison here, this will definitely be a fascinating study in middle-aged mercenary rock stardom.
UPDATE: Stone Temple Pilots have shot down these rumors on Twitter…
Despite recent comments, Scott Stapp is not, nor has he ever been considered as the singer for STP.

UPDATE 2: It turns out Stapp is joining a different band that Weiland had some involvement with. As CoS points out, he clarified via Facebook that he’s joining Art Of Anarchy, a group featuring former Guns N’ Roses member Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal and Disturbed’s John Moyer among others. Weiland contributed vocals to Art Of Anarchy’s album but never considered himself a full-time member. Here’s Stapp’s statement on the matter:
What’s up, Stapp here, I wanted to clarify any confusions on STP and my comment. First off, Scott Weiland in STP is irreplaceable. I was recently asked what I’m currently working on in an interview and could not reveal details or announce this new project. This led the interviewer to assume it was STP and he eagerly kept asking for more details. Evidently my response caused confusion.
I’m excited to share I’ve been working with Art Of Anarchy band whose members are Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, formerly of Guns N Roses, John Moyer of Disturbed and Jon and Vince Votta. Original announcement was slated for July along with our first single and album to follow but happy to share this announcement sooner to clarify.
Art Of Anarchy is the project that I was referring to in the interview not STP. Scott Weiland was a part of Art of Anarchy and that’s the six degrees of separation I was referring to. Always been a fan of STP and I wish them all the best in their search for a new singer.
Allow me to introduce Art Of Anarchy. Stay tuned.
