Chris Farren – “Still Beating”
Friendships are weird and scary! What ties two people together can just as easily tear them apart, and when you’re not related by blood and it’s not exactly love (at least not in that sense), you can be left wondering what ever connected you in the first place, and whether that connection can ever be rekindled. “Still Beating,” the second single from Chris Farren’s debut solo LP Can’t Die, is about the messy dissolution of a friendship and the subsequent feeling of abandonment. “It was hard to believe anyone could ever leave me/ Now tail lights quickly retreating are the only lights I seem to see,” Farren sings. “Is your heart still beating for me?” Instead of reaching out and trying to mend the relationship, Farren sinks deeper into solitude: “I guess I was just like you ‘cuz I gave up too/ Let the days turn to months, avoid everything and everyone.” Despite the song’s painful subject matter, Farren uses the music as an opportunity to create a playful, home-spun tune that’s rooted in nostalgia but feels firmly planted in the present, trying to move forward.
