Mick Jenkins – “Spread Love”
Biggie Smalls famously said “spread love, it’s the Brooklyn way,” but it’s also been the Chicago way for a while now. Mick Jenkins has been helping spread the love in the Windy City for about four years now, and after a couple dope buzz catalysts in 2014’s The Water[s] and 2015’s Wave[s] plus a slew of solid features on his Chicago brethren’s projects, Jenkins is announcing his full-length debut. The album is called The Healing Component and it’s due in a little over a month.
The first single is fittingly titled “Spread Love.” It’s a chill, Moog-soaked affair with Jenkins propagating an uplifting message over hints of gospel and muted trap drums. He raps, “We gon’ try to spread some love, ain’t nobody got to know/ Buying water by the jug, I’m the plug, what you want?/ What you need? Not that hate, if you hatin’ nigga, don’t.” It’s super smooth and avoids the corniness that a love fest like this can sometimes veer into. You can tell Jenkins has been in the love distribution business for quite some time now. Listen.
