Watch Vince Staples Perform “Smile” With The Roots On The Tonight Show
Vince Staples released the great new EP Prima Donna last month. And last night, he was the musical guest on The Tonight Show, where he stood out front of house band the Roots and performed the dark, rock-inspired song “Smile,” easily the Prima Donna track best-suited for performing with the greatest live band in rap history. Staples is an intense, powerful presence, and combined with the band and the lights of The Tonight Show, he turned in one of the strongest late-night TV performances we’ve seen in recent memory. While he was there for the show, he also recorded an online bit for the cameras, talking about how his first concert was Diana Ross at the Hollywood Bowl on Mother’s Day. As ever, he is funnier than most of the actual comedian guests who might appear on The Tonight Show. Watch both the performance and the first-concert bit below.
