From Indian Lakes is the songwriting project of Joey Vannucchi, a California native who grew up without electricity on 40 acres of land just outside Yosemite National Park. Everything Feels Better Now, his fourth full-length and his first since 2014’s Absent Sounds, is arriving in exactly one month, and today, he’s shared a new video for lead single “The Monster.”

Directed by Joshua Halling, the clip follows a depressive young man who ends up murdering everyone in his life. “I was a normal kid, no one could see/ I had a monster that was growing in me,” Vannucchi sings, and as Halling explains, “The video is about that little monster that could easily grow in every one of us; slowly overcoming you without you even knowing. It’s a lifetime of wrong decisions and blaming everybody close to you but yourself — ‘killing’ relationships along the way. It takes something tragic to make you realise that the monster living in your head is actually what you’ve become.”

“The song is about feeling like a monster, and the director took a pretty literal approach to that theme in the plot,” Vannucchi adds. “They gave it a cool retro feeling which I think works with the sounds of the song very well, chorus guitars, reverb, vintage synths. I like that it still has a lighthearted uptempo vibe, accompanying the darkness of the lyrics and matching visuals.” Watch below.
