Flo Morrissey & Matthew E. White – “Grease” (Barry Gibb Cover)
The English singer-songwriter Flo Morrissey recently recorded a whole album of covers with Matthew E. White, the orchestral ’70s-soul revivalist from Richmond, Virginia. That album is called Gentlewoman, Ruby Man, and it’s coming out next month; we’ve already posted their version of Little Wings’ “Look At What The Light Did Now.” Another of the songs they’ve taken on is “Grease,” the theme song from the 1978 movie version of Grease. Lead Bee Gee Barry Gibb wrote the song, and Frankie Valli sang it. Oddly, the original version already sounded more like a Matthew E. White song than the musical’s various fake-’50s numbers did, and White and Morrissey have turned it into a restrained slow-burner. Hear their version below.
Gentlewoman, Ruby Man is out 1/13 on Glassnote.
