Grammys’ Album Of The Year Dark Horse Sturgill Simpson Wishes Frank Ocean Was Nominated Instead
Sturgill Simpson’s A Sailor’s Guide To Earth was one of our favorite albums of the year, but it was still pretty surprising to see his name alongside mega-stars like Adele, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, and Drake in the Grammys’ list of Album Of The Year nominees this morning. Simpson himself seems as surprised as anyone, and in a new interview, he reveals that he wishes Frank Ocean were nominated instead of him.
“I really, really wish, honestly, and no [expletive] — I would’ve liked to see Frank Ocean’s name where mine is,” Simpson tells The New York Times. “But that’s not my place to say. I totally understand [his protest]. I just thought that record was really groundbreaking. I listen to just about everything except country music, so it’s strange.”
Kanye agrees! But Frank Ocean intentionally didn’t submit Blonde or Endless for Grammy consideration, saying that he’d “rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience.”
