Hear Strand Of Oaks Cover The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, & Phish For Lagniappe Sessions
Last week, Timothy Showalter, the raw Midwestern rock ‘n’ roller who records as Strand Of Oaks, released his new album Hard Love. And after the album was done, he sat down to record a few covers of songs he loves for the Aquarium Drunkard’s Lagniappe Sessions series, in which artists record analog versions of other people’s music and then write about what that music means to them. The new Strand Of Oaks session is the second that Showalter has ever recorded, and it includes a pretty fascinating group of artists: The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, and Phish.
Showalter has done the Stone Roses’ starry-eyed psych-rocker “Made Of Stone” as a slow, semi-acoustic dirge. He’s done a fairly faithful take on Primal Scream’s Screamadelica drug-love blues ballad “Damaged.” And he’s done Phish’s relatively downbeat number “Dirt” as a ruminative lament. As someone who loves the Stone Roses and Primal Scream and who has never had any use for Phish, I’m shocked to learn that I like Showalter’s Phish cover better than the other two. Showalter has also written eloquently about all three songs, about what they mean to him.
Check out all three covers at the Aquarium Drunkard. Also, read our cover story on Strand Of Oaks here.
