The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
This week, because of a music video, the President of the United States of America got all pissy with a ’90s G-funk icon. Never let anyone tell you that music videos are no longer relevant. This week’s picks are below.
5. The Weeknd – “I Feel It Coming” (Feat. Daft Punk) (Dir. Warren Fu)
I’m not sure why Abel Tesfaye and his love interest had to crumble into dust at the end, but the dancing and the soft ’80s cinematography are on point. Also, it’s hard not to enjoy the idea that even robots have to wear winter clothes when it’s cold outside.
4. Kvelertak – “Bronsegud” (Dir. Stian Andersen & Erik Treimann)
The life-on-the-road video is generally a deeply boring trope, a product of sloppily edited-together iPhone footage taken by bored band members in vans. Kvelertak took that style and made it fucking epic, which is not a surprise, since they make everything they do epic.
3. Snoop Dogg – “Lavender” (Dir. Jesse Wellens & James DeFina)
Look, it’s dumb. It’s a dumb video. The clown version of Michael Rapaport gets police-murdered and glitter flies out instead of blood. It’s stupid. However, this week would’ve been much less interesting, pop-culturally speaking, if this video hadn’t happened. I think that’s good enough for a spot on this list.
2. Arca – “Reverie” (NSFW) (Dir. Jesse Kanda)
So it turns out that Arca is an eight-foot matador, on artificial satyr legs, with assless chaps and a bleeding butthole and an enormous rubberized-dong situation and a pretty face. I feel like that explains a lot.
1. Mastodon – “Show Yourself” (Dir. Robert Schober)
If director Robert Schober murdered somebody and then went on the run, the resulting police search would be called the Hunt For Robert Schober. Also, this video rules.
