Congrats John Legend On Winning The 1989 Spelling Bee
Congratulations to John Legend! Back in 1989, as The Springfield News-Sun reports, the 10-year-old future singer won the Springfield District Spelling Bee by correctly spelling “prejudice,” and he was a sharp dresser even then. “The suit and tie, the steady gaze, the crisp enunciation — John Stephens came to win the Springfield District Spelling Bee Thursday, and win he did,” reads a 1989 newspaper article headlined “Product of home teaching wins bee.” Legend and his siblings were homeschooled by his mother Phyllis.
