The real best music video of the week is the scene from A Star Is Born where Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga sing “Shallow” together. Watching A Star Is Born this week, I was completely swept up and entertained in the moment. And then, on the walk to the car, I started mentally poking it full of holes. It’s a triumph of craft and acting with a very strange idea of how pop music operates. It’s manipulative — mostly, but not entirely, in good ways. But that “Shallow” scene? That’s an all-timer. You get the basic gist in the trailer, but watching it all play out in context, it’s just enormously moving and thrilling. But I can’t put that one on this week’s list, since it’s not an actual music video. Instead, this week’s picks are below.

5. Meg Myers – “Jealous Sea” (Dir Clara Aranovich)

There is such a thing as good music-video acting. It is a specific and specialized skill. And Meg Myers has it.

4. Twenty One Pilots – “My Blood” (Dir. Tim Mattia)

It can’t be easy to jam an M. Night Shyamalan plot twist into the narrative of a four-minute music video, but this one pulls it off with aplomb. It’s even more emotionally manipulative than A Star Is Born, but I have made peace with the fact that I’m a mark for that stuff.

3. Blood Orange – “Chewing Gum” (Feat. A$AP Rocky) (Dir. Devonté Hynes)

I found Venom to be a lot more watchable than I was expecting, but it’s not the best superhero movie of the fall. This is.

2. Charli XCX & Troye Sivan – “1999” (Dir. Ryan Staake & Charli XCX)

Referential pop-culture comedy in music videos doesn’t usually work all that well for me. But when I saw Charli XCX dressed as all five Spice Girls, I let out a full-belly guffaw, loud enough that both of my dogs looked up to make sure everything was OK.

1. Jon Hopkins – “Feel First Life” (Dir. Elliot Dear)

Hey, a story of hope! As in: Once we’ve completely annihilated our own planet and made it so our kids will live to see everything die, at least we can take comfort in the idea that an adorable sentient spore in a purloined astronaut suit will be able to make something of it. This one just wrecks me.
