The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
This was a great week for music videos. Consider: Enormous lovable dork Shawn Mendes straight-up remade Lost In Translation with himself in the Bill Murray role, a commendably ridiculous thing to even consider doing. Meanwhile, Deerhunter put on cowboy hats and made the Terrence Malick version of an early-’90s Buzz Bin video. And yet neither one of them made it onto this week’s list. Instead, this week’s picks are below.
5. Billie Eilish – “When The Party’s Over” (Dir. Carlos Lopez Estrada)
The gorgeous arthouse reimagining of Lady Deathstrike’s death in X2: X-Men United.
4. Pistol Annies – “Got My Name Changed Back” (Dir. ?)
In which Miranda Lambert gives the world’s sparkliest side-eye.
3. Open Mike Eagle – “Microfiche” (Dir. William Child)
A claymation Open Mike Eagle chokeslams a racist NFL owner, and then a claymation Colin Kaepernick throws a football at a Jeep and makes it explode. Honestly, it’s amazing that this isn’t #1.
2. Rosalía – “Di Mi Nombre” (Dir. Henry Scholfield)
This would’ve been an exceptional mostly-single-take pop video even without the Argento lighting. It’s just that the Argento lighting pushes it to a whole new level.
1. Flasher – “Material” (Dir. Nick Roney)
I don’t want to oversell this video, undersell it, or spoil a single thing that happens. Just watch the motherfucker.
