Vanilla Ice Cancels Austin Show Over Coronavirus Concerns
Turns out Vanilla Ice decided to stop, collaborate, and listen after all.
The rapper born Rob Van Winkle was scheduled to perform at Austin’s Emerald Point Bar & Grill this Friday despite the pandemic spiraling out of control in the Texas capital. As of yesterday, Ice was defending the gig with non-rationale such as, “The 90s were the best. We didn’t have coronavirus, or cell phones, or computers. we had 5.0‘s, blockbuster, Beavis and Butthead, Wayne’s world, Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan.” As of this morning, he tweeted, “I take the coronavirus serious. But we can’t live in a bubble. I think at this point we all understand the severity of it. practice social distancing and wear a mask. This is an outside venue, Fourth of July on the lake with fireworks. Plenty of room for distancing” — which, if those measures were actually enforced, could be construed as a reasonable position. But now it looks like the show will not go on.
Rudy Koski of Fox 7 in Austin reports, “Vanilla Ice just called the owner of Emerald Point Bar & Grill and told him that he is pulling out of Friday’s Show- event canceled due to blow back on capacity dispute with TRAVIS Co.” In a tweet of his own, Ice writes, “Due to the increase in COVID-19 numbers in Austin we’re gonna move the concert to a better date. We were hoping for better Coronavirus numbers by July but Unfortunately the numbers have increased quite a bit so for the safety and health of everyone we’re going to stay home.”
In a video message accompanying the tweet, Ice says he didn’t realize how bad COVID-19 was getting in Austin, that he never intended to become the center of a coronavirus controversy, and that he decided to pull the plug on the show after hearing feedback from fans. In other words, he thought twice about becoming the next Chase Rice. “Anyway, happy 4th of July,” he concludes, “and hopefully by New Years, this corona crap will have a cure. Come on! Go ninja, go!”
As of now, the Color Me Badd show at the same venue is still on as far as we can tell, but the Emerald Point site also hasn’t removed the Vanilla Ice ticket sales from their events page. Watch Ice’s video message below.
There was a problem, yo, he solved it.
