Stream UK Hardcore Band Rated X’s Debut Album United Front
When Tom Pimlott started the UK straight-edge hardcore band Violent Reaction in 2010, he was the sole member of the group. Eventually, Violent Reaction relocated to Leeds, became a full-on band, and put out some hugely important records, ending things with the 2015 album Marching On. Since then, former members of Violent Reaction have gone on to bands like Chubby And The Gang, Higher Power, and Big Cheese. Pimlott himself has been in bands like Arms Race and the Flex. And now Pimlott is once again leading a new hardcore band — one that might be even harder than Violent Reaction.
Pimlott’s new band is called Rated X, and they play fast, rabid old-school hardcore in the Negative Approach mode. Rated X are a lot of fun when they’re doing minute-long sprint-pummels, but they’re even better when they slow down and give their riffs some room to really crunch. Either way, the best thing about the band is Pimlott himself, delivering all the lyrics in a ravaged Cockney grunt that reminds me of UK knucklehead punk like the Exploited even when the music is more indebted to American bands like Minor Threat and SSD.
Rated X released a promo and a demo last year. Yesterday, they dropped their full-length debut United Front — 12 extremely angry songs in 16 minutes. It rips. Stream it below.
United Front is out now on Painkiller Records.
