Respire – “To Our Dead Friends”
Next month the Toronto screamo band Respire will release their surging, overwhelming new album Black Line. The album is a powerful statement that moves from bugged-out metal insanity to glacial post-rock beauty with a rare sense of assurance. It’s the kind of thing that you should be excited about, and Respire’s latest track is further evidence of that.
Respire have already shared the early tracks “Tempest” and “Cicatrice.” Today, they’ve come out with “To Our Dead Friends,” a thrashing despair-wail of a song: “I know, the ending comes too fast and all at once/ I know, we lost this fight so many times before.” Where some Respire songs swing back and forth between loud and stately, “To Our Dead Friends” does both at once, with violins and horns soaring over a chaotic churn.
In director Vanessa Gloux‘s video we see Respire playing in a living room. It’s not a DIY-show situation. Instead, it’s the members of the band raging out in a clean, well-appointed house in the middle of the day, seemingly haunting one very sad person. Check it out below.
Black Line is out 12/4 on Church Road Records. Pre-order it here.
